Councillor Peter Clee has been an influential figure in local government for the last 25 years. Beginning his political journey in August 1998, he was first elected as a candidate for the Cox Peninsula Community Government Council, which later became the Wagait Shire Council due to Local Government reforms in 2008. With an extensive record of community service, Councillor Clee has held several key positions and actively contributed to various committees, demonstrating his commitment to the betterment of the region.
During his tenure as a council member, Councillor Clee has consistently shown his dedication and leadership. He has served as both council president and vice president, playing a pivotal role in shaping the direction and policies of the local government. Furthermore, his involvement in the Top End Shire Steering Committee in 2007 showcased his strategic thinking and collaborative approach to regional development. Despite careful consideration, it was concluded that the formation of a Top End Shire, encompassing Litchfield, Wagait, Coomalie, and Belyuen councils, would not yield significant benefits.
Councillor Clee’s commitment to community engagement is evident through his participation in numerous committees. He has actively contributed to organizations such as the Wagait Shire Emergency Recovery Committee, Wireless Institute Emergency Communications Services (WICEN-NT), NT Emergency Services, Local Government Ministerial Advisory Committees, the Local Government Association of NT (LGANT), Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) and the Local Government Grants Commission. Additionally, he has held significant leadership roles, including chairing The Top End Regional Organisation of Councils (TOPROC) and Vice President of the Local Government Association of the NT, which highlights his ability to collaborate and advocate for the interests of the region.
Throughout his extensive service on the council, Councillor Clee has witnessed significant changes in legislation, council administration, and governance. He has worked with 11 council Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) and has actively participated in CEO selection panels, ensuring that capable leaders are appointed to drive the council’s goals and objectives.
In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Councillor Clee was honoured with the Wagait Shire Citizen of the Year award during the 2018 Australia Day celebrations. This prestigious accolade exemplifies his deep commitment to serving the community and his tireless efforts in making a positive impact. Additionally, he has previously received both the 10-year and 20-year local government service awards, further underscoring his long-standing dedication to public service.
Currently holding the position on the Board of the Local Government Association of NT (LGANT), Councillor Clee continues to play an integral role in advancing the interests of local government. Moreover, his directorship on the Board of the Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) reinforces his commitment to representing the broader Australian local government community. Councillor Clee has also recently been appointed as a member of the Local Government Grants Commission.
